Bronson Research Services (BRS) is an integral part of Bronson Healthcare Group in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the largest healthcare provider in southwest Michigan. The Bronson system includes three hospitals, an outpatient center, a nursing and rehabilitation center and a full range of services.

BRS was developed as a strategic initiative to support a host of clinical investigators in their research endeavors and to create a center of clinical research excellence in southwest Michigan. Our experienced investigators paired with highly skilled certified clinical research coordinators enable us to conduct quality clinical research in phases I, II, III and IV.

For the past decade, BRS has performed both pharmaceutical and medical device sponsored clinical trials, NIH funded trials, investigator-initiated trials and basic science research in a wide range of therapeutic areas, including but not limited to:

Cardiology/Vascular Disease

Christopher Rogers, DO
Dr. Rogers completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Michigan State University/ Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies, and his Cardiology Fellowship at Wayne State University. He is board certified Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology, and Vascular Medicine. Dr. Rogers has been a Cardiologist for over thirteen years at Bronson, and served as an investigator and co-investigator in several pharmaceutical and medical device clinical trials including acute coronary syndrome.

Critical Care

Eric C. Feucht, MD
Dr. Feucht completed both his residency and Post Doctoral Fellowship in Molecular Immunology, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Case Western Reserve. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine. As a Critical Care Intensivist and Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy at Bronson, Dr. Feucht has directed outcomes based and translational research in critical care and infectious diseases and has served as a co-investigator on pharmaceutical clinical trials in disseminated intravascular coagulation and influenza.

Gabriel Pedraza, MD
Dr. Pedraza completed his Internal Medicine residency at Flushing Hospital, and his Critical Care Fellowship at Mount Sinai, New York. Dr. Pedraza completed specialty training in Hyperbaric Medicine in Columbia, South Carolina. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and is a diplomate of The American Board of Internal Medicine in both Critical Care Medicine and Internal Medicine. As Medical Director of adult Critical Care Services at Bronson, Dr. Pedraza has served as an investigator in several pharmaceutical clinical trials including disseminated intravascular coagulation in sepsis and Influenza.

Infectious Diseases

Donald H. Batts, MD
Dr. Batts completed both his Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Disease Fellowship at the University of Michigan. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Clinical Pharmacology. Dr. Batts has extensive experience as an investigator in pharmaceutical clinical trials and is highly published in many therapeutic areas related to Infectious Disease. He has been an Infectious Disease Specialist at Bronson for over twenty years. Dr. Batts is also a scientist who worked on antibiotics and antivirals at The Upjohn Company/Pharmacia in the Infectious Disease discovery unit pre-clinical, as Clinical Research Manager of Clinical Pharmacology (Phase I-II), Director of Medical Affairs in Infectious Diseases (Phase IIIb-IV) and Acting Director of Infectious Diseases Global Development (Phase II-III). Dr. Batts possesses a thorough understanding of research from his unique experience in both drug development and discovery in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as clinical trial supervision and participation in the clinical setting.

Rick Van Enk, PhD
Dr. Van Enk earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Kansas, Kansas City, and completed his post-doctoral fellowship in clinical microbiology at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, IL. He is Director of Infection Prevention and Epidemiology at Bronson Methodist Hospital and the Bronson Healthcare Group. He is a member of the Association of Professionals in Infection Control, certified in infection prevention by the Certification Board of Infection Control, and is a Fellow in the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America. His areas of interest, research and publication are antimicrobial agents and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, vaccines, hospital epidemiology, and the application of hospital design to the reduction of risk of infection in the healthcare environment.

Neurology

Dean D. Kindler, MD

Kelly D. Ybema, MD
Dr. Ybema is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, as well as, the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. She received her medical degree from Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine and completed her residency in neurology at Vanderbilt University. She completed a fellowship in EMG/Neuromuscular Disease at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and has a special interest in disorders of the peripheral nervous system, including peripheral neuropathies and neuromuscular junction disorders; and electromyography. She currently serves as a principal investigator for Bronson Research Services.

Neurosurgery

Alain Y. Fabi, MD
Dr. Fabi earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Neurological Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is board certified in Neurological Surgery and is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the National Association of Spine Surgeons. He is the Administrative Director for Bronson Neurological Services and serves as both principal investigator and sub-investigator for a number of clinical trials. His clinical research experiences spans the past two decades and involves pharmaceutical, biological and medical device trials, including several pivotal IDEs in both brain and spine.

Gregory C. Wiggins, MD
Dr. Wiggins is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He completed his neurosurgical residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and completed fellowships in peripheral nerve surgery at Louisiana State University and in spine at the University of Washington. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the North American Spine Society. He has conducted clinical research for over five years and currently serves as a sub-investigator on numerous clinical trials in both brain and spine.

Psychiatry/Psychology

Nadeem M. Mirza, MD
Dr. Mirza is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both General and Geriatric Psychiatry. He received his medical degree from Punjab University in Lahore, Pakistan and completed his residency training in psychiatry at the University of Connecticut and National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, MD. He completed a general psychiatry fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health and Johns Hopkins University and served as staff at the National Institute of Mental Health, Geriatric Psychiatry Branch in Bethesda, MD. He serves as the medical director for the Geropsychiatry Unit and the Memory Clinic for Bronson Lakeview Community Hospital. He has been involved with clinical research since 1988 and has served as a sub-investigator on numerous studies. His research interests are neurodegenerative diseases, biomarkers and novel treatments in Alzheimer's dementia. He is currently serving as a principal investigator for Bronson Research Services.

Trauma/Emergency Medicine

Paul A. Blostein, MD
Dr. Blostein completed his General Surgery residency at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, New York and his Trauma Fellowship at Maryland Shock Trauma. Dr. Blostein has been a Trauma Surgeon at Bronson for over twenty years and has served as an investigator in pharmaceutical clinical trials including antibiotics in sepsis, and ventilation in respiratory and airway compromise. Among his current research interests are traumatic shock and resuscitation, pelvic fractures, fat embolism syndrome in trauma and small bowel injuries.

Scott B. Davidson, MD
Dr. Davidson completed his General Surgery residency at Wayne State University, is board certified in General Surgery, and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Davidson is the Medical Director of Trauma Surgery Services at Bronson, and also a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve having served in active duty in Iraq in 2008. During that time Dr. Davidson was a co-investigator in several military studies involving resource utilization and trauma resuscitation in multiple casualty incidents, one of which was published in Annals of Surgery. He has co-authored several other trauma related studies, and his current research interests include hemorrhagic shock, resuscitation in early shock and burns, military and civilian mass casualty events.

Sheldon B. Maltz, MD
Dr. Maltz completed his General Surgery residency at Finch University/Chicago Medical School North, and his Critical Care and Trauma Fellowships at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Maltz is board certified in General Surgery and Critical Care, and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Maltz is the Medical Director of Surgical Critical Care at Bronson. He has participated in numerous pharmaceutical clinical trials in critical care including traumatic brain injury, anti-fungal infections, hemorrhagic shock, and sepsis. In addition, he has co-authored numerous articles on trauma related issues.

Jon C. Walsh, MD
Dr. Walsh completed General Surgery residency training at San Joaquin General Hospital, Stockton California and the University of California, San Diego. He was a National Institute of Health Research Fellow at the University of California, Davis and UC-San Diego. Dr. Walsh earned his Masters in Public Health from San Diego State University. He also served as a Commander in the United States Naval Reserve Medical Corps. Dr. Walsh is board certified in General Surgery, and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He is a Trauma Surgeon at Bronson, and has 20 years of experience with pharmaceutical clinical trials including spinal cord injury, ischemic reperfusion, and hypertonic resuscitation to new a few.

BRS is located on the Bronson Methodist Hospital (BMH) campus and, as such, is capable of conducting both inpatient and outpatient studies. BMH is the flagship of Bronson Healthcare Group, a not-for-profit healthcare system serving all of southwest Michigan and northern Indiana. With 380 licensed beds and all private rooms, BMH provides care in a variety of specialties including cardiology, orthopedics, surgery, emergency medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, and oncology with advanced capabilities in critical care as a Level I Trauma Center; in neurological care as a Joint Commission certified Primary Stroke Center, in cardiac care as the region's first accredited Chest Pain Emergency Center; in obstetrics as the leading BirthPlace and only high-risk pregnancy center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in southwest Michigan, and in pediatrics as one of only six children's hospitals in the state of Michigan. BRS provides secure drug and device storage areas, secure record storage area, refrigerated centrifuge, both -20 and -80 freezers, 12 lead ECG, and blood drawing services. Additional services include private exam rooms, state of the art surgical suites, a certified laboratory and pharmacy, sleep lab and EMG services, as well as radiology services including CT and MRI.

Kalamazoo, Michigan is located equidistant (approximately 150 miles) from Detroit and Chicago. The Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport is served directly from both cities in addition to Minneapolis, Cincinnati and others. Bronson is located less than 15 minutes from the airport.
