Linking Services to Patient Needs for Improved Patient Outcomes - Computer Assisted System of Patient Assessment and Referral (CASPAR)
The purpose of this study is to determine if providing a county specific electronic resource
guide with low and no cost services to outpatient substance abuse counselors, results in
more and better matched services for the clients. These services are not limited to
substance abuse treatment, they include such services as legal assistance, financial
assistance, mental health, etc. It is hypothesized that by treating the "whole client" the
result will be longer substance abuse treatment stays and greater success with sobriety.
The proposed research study is directed at performing health services research in an
estimated 15 community-based abstinence-oriented outpatient addiction treatment programs by
developing ways of incorporating research-derived measures into standard clinical practice
in the treatment of substance abuse clients. The primary goals are to use training and
technology transfer to match services to client needs, increase the number of services
received by clients, and improve client outcomes. In total, 20 counselors and 400 clients
will participate in the study.
Comparisons: Two groups will be compared, a control and experimental group. The Standard
Assessment group (control group), will provide treatment as usual and the Enhanced
Assessment group (experimental group), will provide treatment with the use of an electronic
resource guide that contains low and no cost services in the county in the which the
treatment program is located.
Inclusion Criteria:
- New client to a participating outpatient substance abuse treatment program
Exclusion Criteria:
- Client is currently receiving on-going Methadone maintenance treatment
