Cancer is the general term for a group of more than 100 diseases. Some of the most common places cancer develops are the breast, lung, prostate or colon, but cancer can affect many other sites as well. What all cancers have in common is that the cells are abnormal, grow out of control, and may invade or "travel" to normal tissues. If left untreated, cancer becomes a life-threatening illness. The good news is that survival rates have never been higher, thanks to better diagnostic tools and ways to treat the disease.

Carolinas HealthCare System's Levine Cancer Institute aims to build "a cancer institute without walls," by increasing access to specialist consultations, research offerings, program offerings and services to member institutions throughout the Carolinas.
