Spartanburg Medical Research (SMR), a dedicated Phase I-III research site, has conducted clinical trials since 1990. Located on a peaceful 2.6 acre wooded campus fronting Business I-85 opposite Spartanburg Technical College, SMR is only 20 minutes from Spartanburg/Greenville's airport and 70 minutes from Charlotte's airport and convenient to area hotels, and hospitals. Medical Director:

Charles M. Fogarty, MD, CPI, has been in private practice in Spartanburg, South Carolina since 1978 and began conducting clinical trials in 1990. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease and he is a certified Principal Investigator.

He has also been Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy at Spartanburg Technical College from 1985 to present. At Spartanburg Regional Medical Center he has been Director of Pulmonary Function Lab at 1978-2000; Director of Respiratory therapy 1980-2000; Chairman of the Department of Medicine1994-2000; and IRB member 1996-1999. He was President of the Spartanburg Medical Society 1991-1992. He is listed in Best Doctors in America, and Marquis Who's Who in Healthcare. He has been Principal Investigator in over 300 Phase I-III trials and has undergone four FDA audits with no findings.

Spartanburg Medical Research's Clinical Trial Coordinator staff has over 100 combined years of clinical research experience. Our coordinators are ACLS certified and are recognized for their experience at area hospitals and for their community volunteer work.

Coordinators

  • Nicole Crockford, PA-C has been working with SMR as a sub-investigator since 2004. Nicole has experience in working with in-patient pulmonary care/critical care as well as seeing patients at our affiliate Lung & Chest Medical Associates. Her research interests include Phase I through Phase IV studies in COPD.
  • Dale Cook, CPT, CCRC has been working with SMR since 1998. Her previous experience includes working in a histology laboratory. Her current research interests include working with adult and pediatric allergy, asthma, and eczema.
  • Jami Jones, ATC, CCRC has been with SMR since 2002. Her previous experience includes working as a certified athletic trainer and teaching German to high school students in the local area school district. Her research interests include COPD.
  • Anita Morris, RN, CCRC has been with SMR since 1997. Her previous experience includes working as a cardiac care nurse at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Her current research interests include Phase 1 studies, COPD, and Osteoporosis
  • Sherry Yeisley, MS, CCRC has been with SMR since 1999. She is a graduate from Middle Tennessee State University where she completed her thesis on proteins involved in insulin sensitivity at Louisiana State University. Her research interest is in Ph. 1-III COPD trials.
  • Ellen Nichols, CCRC has been with SMR since 2003. Her previous research experience has been with vaccine and allergy trials. Her current research interests include vaccine, allergy, and asthma trials.
  • Susan Miller, RTR, CCRC has been with SMR since 1996. Her previous experience includes being a radiology technologist since 1977. Her research interest includes COPD, Hypertension, Cachexia, Bronchitis, and Migraine.
  • Deanna Guest, RN has been with SMR since 2006. She has 2 previous years experience in research. Her previous experience is working at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center as a nurse in the emergency room and critical care departments. Her research experience includes Asthma, Device Studies, Hypertension, and Diabetes trials.
  • Diane Roberts, MLT, CCRC has been with SMR part time since 2001 and full time since 2005. She has 30 years experience as a medical laboratory technician. Her research interests include Diabetes & Vaccine trials.
  • Connie McCauley, LPN has been with SMR since 2005. She has 28 years of nursing experience. Her research interests include Diabetes, Hypertension, and Hyperlipidemia.
  • Alison Fogarty, RN has been with SMR since 2006. Her research interest includes Phase I Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoporosis.
  • Jodi Sanders, RTR, CDT, CRC has been with SMR since 2000. Her previous experience includes working as a radiology technologist since 1984 and performing bone density scans since 2000. Her current research interests include working with adult and pediatric allergy, asthma, and eczema.

Lab Technicians:

  • Christy Sharp, CPT, ASCP has worked with SMR since 2004. Christy has years of experience working at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center laboratory. She currently oversees the laboratory department.
  • Christopher Armstrong, PBT has worked with SMR since 2007. Christopher previously has 22 years with EMT and Fire Fighter with Fire services experience along with certification in Homeland Security.

Their Lab duties include: serial PK collection and processing, sputum processing, PPD administration and review, IV placement, certified IATA specimen shipping, OSHA coordinator(s), and proficient in using I-STAT monitor.

Regulatory Affairs

  • Angie Williams, BS, CCRP has been with SMR since 1997. Prior to joining SMR Ms. Williams graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice.
  • Tessa Wilson, CCRP has been with SMR since 2005. Her previous work experience includes Palmetto Pediatrics for 6 years and the Pediatric Evening Clinic for 3 years.

Their duties include: receiving and submitting interest questionnaires, regulatory document preparation, IRB submissions(initial documents, SAE's, protocol deviations, etc.), maintenance of regulatory binders, Budget and Contract negotiations, Audit preparations, monitor scheduling, study closure responsibilities, corresponding with Sponsor(s), CRO(s), IRB(s), DEA, & FDA, Site & Study specific advertising, SOP maintenance, document sorage preparations, social Committee, and assist with subject visits/lab when needed.

Administrative Staff

  • Martha Rost has been with SMR since 1992. Her duties include payroll, tax and accounting. Martha has more than 40 years experience in public and private accounting and has served as a consultant with physician groups since 1990
  • Melissa Seiler has been with SMR since 2004. Her duties include CRF completion and maintenance for ongoing studies. She also assists in the areas of filing, corresponding, study initiations and source review and creation.
  • Lynne Sarkisian has been with SMR since 2006. Her duties include various financial responsibilities, coordinating the reception area(s), maintaining contract binders, ordering and mailing duties. She also assists with subject visits, source review, social committee, study binder filing, and study drug check-in.
