New Clinical Trials for Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis can be an uncomfortable and serious ailment. If you suffer from this disease and are interested in participating in a Diverticulitis clinical trial, please review our list of current studies. Ongoing clinical studies of Diverticulitis strive to learn more about the causes of this disease and find better ways to diagnose and cure it. There are Diverticulitis clinical trials being conducted that could one day potentially benefit everyone who is affected by this disease.
What is Diverticulitis?
Diverticulitis is a digestive disease that occurs in the large intestine. Pouches that develop outside of the colon that then become inflamed are the cause of diverticulitis. Symptoms may include pain, fever, constipation or diarrhea, nausea, and a high white cell count in blood tests. Symptoms generally start slowly and get progressively worse very quick. An exact cause for Diverticulitis is not known, but a lack of fiber in a person’s diet is suspected. A CT scan is used to definitely diagnose this disease.
Diverticulitis Treatments
Diverticulitis treatment depends on the severity and frequency that a person is experiencing episodes. Some people only have one bout with the disease and giving their bowels a rest, re-hydrating via an IV and a dose of antibiotics, cures it. In very severe cases emergency surgery may be required if the pouches burst.
People who suffer from acute attacks usually seek a more permanent treatment for Diverticulitis. This can include elective surgery that removes parts of their bowels. This is also sometimes combined with a colectomy that requires the use of a colostomy bag. After surgery a low fiber diet is generally suggested so that the colon has time to rest and heal.
